Origins of UFC

Art Davie is the visionary behind the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), a sport that has become synonymous with Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). His idea was to create a platform where fighters from diverse disciplines could compete. Although Bruce Lee’s dream of MMA influenced the sport's inception, it was Davie's efforts that ultimately brought the UFC to life. In 1993, Davie and twenty-eight investors formed WOW Promotions, the company that would later evolve into the UFC. With the help of SEG (Sports Entertainment Group), who signed a pay-per-view deal with WOW Promotions in May 1993, the UFC was able to begin broadcasting and reach a wider audience.

Reform

In the early days of the UFC, the competition had minimal rules. Techniques like groin strikes, fish-hooking, and head-butting were allowed. While biting and eye-gouging were banned, the sport's violent nature was often criticized, and it took some time for the UFC to adopt a more regulated structure. Over the years, significant changes were made to make the sport safer and more mainstream, with the introduction of weight classes, time limits, and banned substances.

By the early 2000s, UFC's popularity began to skyrocket, with mainstream media coverage and a dedicated fanbase growing around the world. Even the 2008 global financial crisis did little to slow down the momentum. UFC 100 in 2009 broke records with 1.6 million pay-per-view buys, and the UFC continued to reach new heights, regularly breaking box office and viewership records.
